What exactly is a "Torbie" Ragdoll? Meet MacGyver 💙

Hi Reader,

Last week, I mentioned that there is BIG NEWS in the Floppycats' family....MEET MacGyver! SHE and Bo have already formed a bond and love one another =). MacGyver was named after the popular 1980s-early 1990s TV Show that my cousin Jill loved. I love her name as well because I, too, loved that show.

MacGyver comes from Bluedreamer Ragdolls in Kansas City (where we live), and she is a blue torbie. Torbie = tabby + tortie, so she is a blue lynx like Trigg was, but she has fun tortie colors on top of it. The back of her ears really show her torbie. We have NEVER had a tortie or torbie in the family, so I am very excited about this. I had posted her when we went to visit her, but it wasn't definitive then that my cousin was going to get her, so I didn't mention it yet.

Bo continues to amaze us all with his outgoing-ness, lax-attitude to life and high curiosity of water!

Meet MacGyver! My Cousin's New Blue Torbie Ragdoll Kitten 🐾

Welcome the newest member of our family, MacGyver! My cousin Jill just brought home this incredibly clever, blue torbie mitted Ragdoll kitten. If you've ever wondered what a "torbie" is, it's a beautiful mix of tortie patches and tabby (or lynx) stripes! She comes from Bluedreamer Ragdolls in Kansas City, Missouri (proud parents: Myluckyday Velveteen Fern and Cwtchycats Enry Iggins). Jill named her after the ultimate 1980s TV problem-solver because this little girl has the curious energy to match. Hit that subscribe button to watch MacGyver grow into her big mitted paws, and drop a welcome message for her in the comments below!

Kids and Cats

Over the 18 years of having Floppycats, I have held back a lot when it comes to kids and cats. I have always been atonished how quickly people are to judge from a single photo what is going on or that the child is being allowed to harm the cat. I posted this photo recently of my sister's 12-year-old Addie and her 2-year-old son.

Paddy, home from daycare, loves to lay on Addie. Addie loves the attention.

This reminded me of how I felt on Monday after a long day - I wanted to do the same with Charlie. He would not have appreciated it, however, and thereforeI do not do that to him.

If I saw this online, I would never leave some of the comments people leave. I also wonder why people think I would post this if I thought the cat was being harmed at all.

  1. My nephew is 2 years old - the cat is far more nimble, agile and quick than he is! If she wanted to avoid him, she would - my sister's other cat, Ash, wants nothing to do with the kids. He always is 3-4 steps away from them. Addie could do the same, she chooses not to.
  2. If he was hurting Addie or had been hurting Addie, she has claws and teeth to defend herself. And if he had hurt her before, she wouldn't allow this to continually happen.
  3. My sister would never allow her children to hurt their pets. Nor would she take the time to snap a photo. This child has a true connection with animals. He is very in tune. He also loves cats.

It is cats like Addie that make a child fall deeply in love with the species. It just sucks to share this with joy and delight, only to be met with crappy comments. So wanted to take the time to share this information.

I LOVE THIS PHOTO. LOVE IT. WHY? It represents everything to me - a child's natural love for an animal, a willing cat that is helping a child learn about the joys of cats, a release at the end of a long day that a family pet can provide for a child, a child's attention to a family pet that makes it feel loved, not to mention a shared love between my nephew and Addie that only they have. I love my nephew's love of cats, and I appreciate Addie immensely for allowing him to do this with her. She is so good with him and chooses to do this.

There are a lot of interactions with kids and cats in my extended family, and it is vitally important that children are introduced, live with and experience felines, if their adult parents are able to care for a cat. They will be the next generation that teaches people who never had a cat what you do!

Elvis and Beverly Leslie – Ragdolls of the Week

"In 2013, after my beloved Maine Coon (Oscar) passed away, I started looking at cats on online rescue sites. I knew I wanted a big fluffy boy cat, so I first looked for a Maine Coon. Finding none within reasonable driving distance, I started looking at other breeds that I knew were typically large, laid-back, and fluffy. A friend of mine used to talk about how much she loved Ragdolls, so I typed that into the rescue site breed search."

Hi Reader, There is more BIG news in the extended Floppycats' family...but I haven't had a chance to properly announce it yet...can you guess what it is? My cousin was recently out of town, so I had the great pleasure of seeing her seal point Ragdoll kitten, Bo, almost daily while she was gone - and man, he is a cool cat. I am most impressed by his Ragdoll limpness when you pick him up. Reminds me of Caymus, the only other true "ragdoll" that I have picked up. Caymus, at 17 lbs, required two...

Ragdoll cat belly up on a grounding mat

Hi Reader, Charlie keeps seeking out grounding on his own accord. Here's what I love about Charlie's attraction to the grounding mat - he has no skin in the game. He didn't read some newsletter. He didn't see an ad on social media and wondered if it worked. He found the mat on my bed, got on it and realized it did something in his body. And he continues to return to it for a few hours a day to get the benefits. Meaning, it's not his mind telling him it is supposed to help with inflammation or...
