A new way to help animals (and it's better than GoFundMe)

Hi Reader,

Last week, I asked you guys what you thought about posting GoFundMe links on Floppycats. Thank you to all who took the time to write to me and respond with feedback. After reflection and also your insights, I have decided that I will not post GoFundMes or similar on the site or in the newsletter, unless it is a very special circumstance. I have decided this because:

  1. They make Floppycats feel less like a community and more like a place to ask for money.
  2. Opening the door to a lot of different requests can be overwhelming.
  3. Scammers could easily abuse this, and I don't have the time, resource,s or bandwidth to research
  4. The site wasn't established or created with this sort of thing in mind, and I don't want it to become about that
  5. A reader told me about something really cool that's available:

"How We Use Nextdoor to Help Local Animals

Our community uses Nextdoor groups to reunite lost pets with their families and get sick or injured animals the care they need. This method leverages the power of local networks to create a reliable safety net for animals.

Reuniting Lost Pets

We've found that Nextdoor is one of the most effective tools for finding lost animals. Here's how our system works:

  1. Join Nextdoor and Animal Groups: We start by joining Nextdoor and becoming active members in one or more local animal-related groups. This builds familiarity and trust within the community.
  2. Post Lost and Found Pets: We post about all kinds of lost and found animals—dogs, cats, birds, and more. Because we've established a presence in the groups, other members are more likely to respond and help search for the animal. We've found that this "you scratch my back" approach works well; people are often willing to help find a lost pet even if it isn't theirs, knowing that the community will do the same for them.
  3. Prioritize No-Kill Solutions: When we find a lost animal, our goal is to get it home safely. If the owner can't be located, we never take the animal to a kill shelter. Our focus is on finding a safe, no-kill alternative or foster home.

Assisting Sick or Injured Animals

Our community also provides financial support for sick or injured animals. To ensure the funds go directly to the animal's care, we follow this process:

  1. Request Information: We ask the pet owner for the name of the vet clinic, their name, and the name of the animal.
  2. Donate Directly to the Vet: We donate money directly to the veterinary clinic on behalf of the animal. This method ensures that the funds are used specifically for the animal's treatment and protects everyone involved.

By using Nextdoor and these clear guidelines, we've created a successful, community-led system that helps animals while also keeping volunteers safe and their information private. I encourage you to share this approach with your own members."

That made a lot more sense to me, and it's a win-win for the pet owner still.

Peace, love, and purrs,

Jenny

How to Kill Fleas in Carpet: THE BEST WAY to GET RID of THEM FAST!

This video shows how I used a 1/2 salt and 1/2 baking soda mixture to get rid of the fleas in my house. I also gave my cat, Charlie, garlic. Before that, I tried diatomaceous earth, which helped somewhat, but it wasn't until we used garlic that we achieved true success in getting rid of them. This was a few years ago, and it remains to be one of my most popular videos on YouTube because it's a natural way to get rid of fleas without exposing your family or pets to harsh chemicals.

I also have a natural flea control page on Floppycats that compiles all the information I've learned from hours of researching Facebook posts and more.

Elfin/Cheerble Pumpless Cat Water Fountain

I love our Elfin fountains - we have two. I have one in my Master bath and one in my sunroom on the first floor. Charlie drinks from both of them. I had to go out of town for field hockey last weekend, so I was running around doing multiple things to get ready to leave and prepare for the cat sitter. I remembered last minute that I needed to switch out the cat fountains, and it literally took me about 10 minutes to get them both clean and ready. SO SIMPLE. SO EASY. K.B. Beauregard – Ragdoll Kitten of the Month

"Twenty-three years ago, in a new state, with a new baby and a new husband, at a new job, and with new doubts and insecurities, I met a new friend. For privacy I will call her “K.B.” She just shined. She gave to me a grace and hope that none other has been able to impart. She was a beautiful influence and she loved beautiful cats. Two of them. Bianca and Fifi. Two ragdoll beauties. The times I shared with my friend (my soulmate), and her kitties were too few. Her precious Ragdolls just floored me, as did she. Grace, beauty, gentleness, fun and wisdom were found in her. Her friendship got me through some pretty tough times. Through the years I was able to adopt two Ragdolls. One a retired breeder and one from the shelter. Both have since passed. And, unfortunately… so has my friend. She left us at only 42 years old. After 21 years of friendship. She died a violent, freakish, and disturbing death. Three years later my grief still overtakes me at times. The word “shocking” is an understatement..."

Hi Reader, Hope you and your kitty are well. Something happened this past weekend that took my breath away - I found Charlie sleeping in the sink upstairs, which is something that hasn't happened in about two years. To me, this was an excellent sign that he is feeling more like himself. I shared last week that I have been working with a homeopath in the UK with Charlie, and the last remedy he had (there have been several, including one that expelled liver flukes) helped to expel heavy metals....

Hi Reader, Happy October! I love September and October, but mostly the beginning of October because September is still lingering. So, it's really September that I still love. Charlie has also been enjoying the weather - posted this photo on Monday of him. Charlie is doing well. We have continued to work with the homeopath in the UK, and it has been interesting to see the changes in Charlie since he started taking the remedies. I cannot tell you how much I WISH homeopathy were as well-known as...

Ragdoll cat story

Hi Reader, A reader wrote me this week asking for help for her cat, Charlie. He is in the ER, and they do not know exactly what the matter is with him. She has created a GoFundMe-type fundraiser for him; however, I traditionally don't allow posts asking for money on the Floppycats Facebook Group or Page. For a few reasons: I'm concerned that posting fundraisers might: Make Floppycats feel less like a community and more like a place to ask for money. This leads to a drop in the fun cat content...
